Recovery from rape
& sexual abuse

It is an honour to be a RedKite helpline volunteer, I wanted to become a volunteer to help those who are vulnerable and find it difficult to speak out on their situations. I wanted to be part of a community who went out of their way to ensure those who need support will get it and RedKite is that community and so much more.

As a volunteer, I received impeccable training and gained large amounts of knowledge from such warm, kind and friendly women who had such amazing personalities. It was their mission to help us succeed in our training as a cohort. Within our seminars we were given notes and guidance for each topic, my understanding and knowledge of the topics was broadened to a great extent. In addition to this I was taught many skills in order to handle the calls from different types of service users. Training went on for a while to ensure we had thoroughly covered everything in order to work on the helpline proficiently. The teaching was fantastic and our supervisors were able to support us throughout the entirety of it. Once we had passed our assessments at the end of the detailed training, we were able to work on the helpline itself. As a volunteer, the shifts are very flexible and can meet the needs of a busy social life. I enjoy working on the helpline, to begin with I was nervous for any calls but as time went by and receiving support from my peers I was able to handle calls with ease and confidence which made me glad I was there for someone in need of help. As volunteers, our mental health is very important as well as the service users, thus we have endless amounts of ongoing support and fortnightly meetings to check in on how everyone is doing. It is comforting to know that whenever we need our supervisors they are always willing to fulfill our needs and give us their full support. It makes me happy to be part of such a loving group of people. Not only have I gained many skills by being a volunteer of the helpline but I have met amazing and kind people.

Volunteer with us, make a real difference to the lives of rape and sexual abuse survivors.
